Barcelona more than made up for our bad experience in Tunis and the fact that I still had not received my luggage and was wearing my clothes from the airplane for a week now. Barcelona is a large city done right. The thoroughfares are large and you can walk anywhere or easily hop on a bus. The city is spotless, it's as if a brand-new city was built to look like an old one.
We spent 2 days walking up and down La Rambla, the main walking area of the city anchored by a statue of Cristobol Colombo at one end (where our ship was docked) and extended out to one of Gaudi's designed buildings. We'd been to La Sagrada Familia before so we didn't bother going again this time. We decided to explore every side street and alley we could find with no thought at all to where we were going. It turned out wonderfully as we found the best shopping places and tiny markets that we could never find again or even locate on a map.
That night we ventured along the waterfront in search of a Fodor's recommended dinner, with the help of our handy dandy iPhone GPS we found it easily enough but the prices were a bit higher than we would have liked so instead we found a great Paella place a block down and had a wonderful dinner of fresh paella and beer.
Finally my luggage arrived! Woohoo! It was like Christmas morning having a choice of what to wear finally. The ship was nice enough to launder my clothes for me every night so at least I was stinking up the place but that's no substitute for having an appropriate outfit know what I mean? I fell in love with baguettes with salami and brie, what a simple concept that's so simple to make and so tasty. I don't know what they do over in Europe to make their bread so tasty but I want it! Bridget has chosen Barcelona as the place in Europe she most wants to move to. As for me it's number 2 on the list but she's better with Spanish than French or Italian so I don't blame her. My Italian and French are better so my favorites are in those countries.
